Hey everyone,

With my time as a student campaigner nearing its final week, it seems more than fitting to me to reflect on one of the more trying parts of the campaign. The moment I am referring to is our times spent at the Kitchener Market. I say "trying" because amidst the salivating aromas and unpredictable weather, it would be easy for any team to lose sight of its goal for the day. I myself caught myself daydreaming about biting into one of the cinnamon buns on sale on more than one occasion. The weather created another distraction when the intense winds and rains managed to knock out the power for over an hour. Despite these hurdles, the team was able to band together and reach our predetermined goals with an optimistic attitude and a smile on our faces. The people who we talked to varied from being drive-through using gas guzzlers, to bikers using off the grid environmental zealots and thus gave us plenty of experience on learning how to relate to the masses. Well it's back to work, pounding the pavement, and spreading the word. Keep it real, and reduce the juice.

Hi everyone!

I'm one of the students that is going to be working for RTJ this summer. This last week has been our training week, and for that week we have had plenty of people that are concerned about the environment talking to us about how we can help residents reduce their energy and fuel consumption. The week has been a lot of work on how we can approach people to inform them and answer all of their questions and concerns. I am one of the five students working this summer for RTJ and I just can't wait to get on the streets and give out information!

Hey everyone!

This year has taken off to a great start! So much has happened in the last few weeks and we must share all of the juicy details! Now where to start? A couple weeks ago we attended and put on workshops at Waterloo's EcoFest that took place at the CIGI building. What a great couple of days we had there! On the Friday we provided workshops for over 100 students explaining how climate change works and what they can do to help slow it down. We also had our renewable energy trailer there which powered my iPod/boom-box (enabling some pretty sweet dance moves from myself). The kids, teachers and parents all loved the information we had to share and really enjoyed learning about the solar and wind power generated by the trailer. On Saturday EcoFest was then open to the public where we spoke to tons of people about emissions reduction. We even had several WCI students and their solar powered truck that they built at the event! EcoFest was definitely a huge success and we cannot wait to go back next year!

Another important item on the agenda was of course hiring our high school students! After several interviews, very important business talk, incredible interview questions and answers, and of course the noises of several insects (like earth worms) were provided by the applicants, we came to our decision on the 4 WCI students who would be lucky enough to work alongside us this summer. Our students have a wide range of educational backgrounds such as biology and environmental justice to name a couple. Did I mention they all love the environment? Cause they do. They also love their community and want to help keep everyone healthy! These kids pretty much rock… go team! We also have one student who is travelling all the way from Quebec to work with us for the summer!

What else have we done thus far (aside from all the office work/meetings galore/contacting people in order to be EVERYWHERE this summer!)? Ah yes, Waterloo Region put on an event for the community showcasing their public works vehicles, staff and those who work in the community doing totally stellar work (that sounds like us!). So yes, we were at the event whipping up hundreds of SOLAR POWERED snow cones. How exciting is that? Let me tell you… it's exciting! The snow cone machine was of course powered by our amazing trailer and there was a lot of interest in it because people these days seem to be loving the whole alternative fuels movement, and what better way to power something than by doing it emissions free!? I don't think there is a better way!

We are also booked to be at the Kitchener Farmers Market, Music and Movie night in Waterloo Park, Home Depot on Tuesday afternoons and there will be plenty more to come! Check out the events link in the column to the left to keep track of where we'll be so you can come visit us at least once this summer!

I hope everyone has been having a totally awesome spring!

See you soon!

Hello folks!

So here we are once again - another summer project! Last summer's transportation-conservation project, as well as the past fall and winter anti-idling campaigns, were all very successful… but there's lots more to do! We've hired a new Team Leader (Michelle) for the summer to help run the show. Michelle is in Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) and a very enthusiastic asset to RTJ. We've just started to dig into the planning process, which is going quite smoothly due to some lessons learned from last year. This time around, we'll be at a lot more community events and even hosting our own! That means more RTJ on the streets, more outreach and more fun! The project design process is also going very well thanks to some research done by Dr. Manuel Reimer and his team of research assistants from WLU. They surveyed the residents we reached last summer and discovered some valuable information and themes that will make this summer's campaign even better! We're asking residents to make an even bigger commitment to cycle, walk and take transit wherever they can.

We realize that the effects of climate change are becoming more and more apparent with each passing year and project. However, this energizes us to reduce more emissions and have an even greater impact in our communities - it's a big task but don't worry, our energy is renewable!

That's all for now - like I said, we're still in the early planning stages, so check back often to see our progress!

Cheers,
Sara Wicks
Project Manager
