SPAP Team 2007: The Centre Dufferin District High School Environmental Club was formed in 2004 after students travelled to Guelph for an event about reducing electricity use in the school board which featured David Suzuki. The core group of budding environmentalists soon created a variety of events for their school which became very successful. They run a bi-annual battery drive where they collect used batteries from students to bring to the hazardous waste days. They annually fundraise for the World Wildlife Foundation and hold other events including clothing swaps and Vegan days as well as regular tree planting events in the community. Members of the group also traveled to Montreal in December of 2005 for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change where they attended events and toured the city. The club was also recently recognized for their work by the Chief Conservation Officer, Peter Love and the Conservation Bureau as well. Throughout
all of their work, the CDDHS Environmental Club has tried to inform the
members of their school community and the community as a whole on the
environmental issues that are occurring around them. They have also tried
to instigate change in this same community through these projects. Rebecca Higgins-Rollinson is a graduate of CDDHS in Shelburne and is currently enrolled at the University of Toronto. She is a founding member of the environmental club at CDDHs and she is also the very talented artist who designed our RTJ logo. Steve Krysak is a graduate of CDDHS in Shelburne and is enrolled in classes in the University of Waterloo's Environment and Business program. He was a founding member of his high school's environmental club which is how he got involved with Reduce the Juice. Steve loved working with RTJ on the Powercost Monitor project and looks forward to doing more to help his community reduce its Ecological Footprint. In is spare time Steve spends time with his friends, take pictures and works. Brooke Crewson who just recently graduated from Centre Dufferin District High School, got involved in the Environmental Club due to her interest in world issues and her desire to help her community become more energy efficient. Through the Environmental Club she became involved with Reduce the Juice which has taught her a great deal about energy conservation. She looks forward to working on more green projects around the community to help Shelburne take a leading role in becoming a green community. At school Brooke was also involved in other groups such as Students Council. In the fall of 2007 Brooke is planning to attend Wilfred Laurier University to study History and Political Science. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her friends and paint. Other members of the Team:
