Who Are We?

Reduce the Juice Kingston is a youth led project designed to educate the public about environmentally friendly energy use, water use, and waste and recycling. Through conversations with local residents, our goal is to garner pledges to reduce waste on all fronts. Meet the team!

Team Leaders:

Brooke Giles is the resident energy girl for RTJ Kingston 2009. She has just completed teacher's college at Queen's University, after previously completing an undergraduate degree in sociology at McGill University. She has always been a supporter of environmental initiatives and is excited to be a part of a group with such a successful track record. As a proud born-and-bred Kingstonian, she is looking forward to being able to give back to her community in such a meaningful and rewarding way. In her off time she can be found outdoors, whether enjoying the waterfront or relaxing on a downtown patio.

Sarah Fetterly will be leading the Waste & Recycling initiative for the Reduce the Juice Kingston project this summer. She is entering into her third year in the Commerce program at Queen's University. During her first two years at Queen's Sarah dedicated a large portion of her time to playing on the university's varsity volleyball team. A recent course in Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics sparked her interest in the environment. She is excited to share her growing knowledge with Kingstonians and to provide easy actions for members of the community to reduce their impact on the environment.

Katie Matthews is the water conservation and efficiency expert for the Kingston Project. She has just completed her second year in the Life Science program at Queen's University. Her goal after she graduates is to attend medical school and her hobbies include playing volleyball on the Queen's women's volleyball team. She is particularly interested in the relationship between climate change and the impact that it will have on public health. She is excited to start making a difference in the Kingston community by sharing her newfound knowledge about the environment and encouraging the community to take action and 'reduce their juice'!

Student Campaigners:

Derek is 17 years old and is going into grade 12 at SHS. He joined Reduce the Juice because he wanted to help promote sustainable living and to also try and create a positive change in the Kingston area in regards to household emissions. In his spare time Derek enjoys playing team sports, (especially basketball) and loves to go water-skiing during the summer. Derek is looking forward to making a change in his community and also having fun in the process!

Hillary is an 18 year old Aquarian who loves reading, writing, the sun and anything Harry Potter. She has just graduated St. Theresa's Catholic Secondary School in Belleville. She plans to take a gap year before starting the journalism program at Ryerson University. She has always been a conscious supporter of environmental initiatives and has been an active member of her school's "Green Team". Through becoming a RTJ student auditor she feels like she is finally doing her part to help out the environment.

Jena has just graduated from Holy Cross Secondary School, and in the fall she is attending the University of Toronto for commerce. She finds being a student auditor for Reduce the Juice very rewarding because she feels she is doing her part to preserve the environment for future generations! She also enjoys athletics such as volleyball and cheerleading, as well as travelling and hiking.

Hannah is very excited to be working with the Reduce the Juice team as a student auditor. She just graduated from Kingston.C.V.I this year and will be going to McMaster University in the fall for nursing. She has always had a great interest in the environment and issues surrounding it. The humanitarian and ethical effects of climate change are of particular interest to her. She is looking forward to meeting and talking with Kingston residents this summer.
