What is a PowerCost Monitor?

The BlueLine PowerCost monitor is a very cool device which displays a home's current level of electricity use by counting the revolutions of the disk on its electricity meter. The monitor has two battery operated parts: a reader which sits on the electricity meter, and a display which receives a wireless signal from the reader and shows the homes instantaneous electricity consumption in units of kilowatt hours (kWh) or dollars. Once the reader is installed the display can be kept in an easy to access place inside the home so that the residents can keep track of their electricity use without having to go outside and decipher the electricity meter.

Most homeowners keep track of their electricity on the time interval of a month through their bill, but the problem with this is that a monthly reading does not often reflect specific patterns in a home's electricity consumption patterns. It is thought that the instantaneous feedback from the BlueLine monitor allows a homeowner to witness the effect of turning appliances on and off and challenges them to adopt a 'how low can you go' attitude towards electricity use in their home.

*Obtaining a PowerCost Monitor: Unfortunately the Reduce the Juice PowerCost Monitor Project has been completed so it is impossible for other households in Shelburne to act as test homes. It is possible however to purchase your own PowerCost monitor through www.save-electricity.ca at a cost of approximately $150.
